The combination of flexible furniture, private meeting spaces, and collaborative learning areas reflects modern workplace and educational design principles, creating an environment that supports both professional practice and active learning.

The University of Plymouth Law Clinic

Designed to support both professional legal practice and experiential learning, The Law Clinic at the University of Plymouth provides a welcoming, confidential, and highly functional environment where students work alongside academic staff and legal professionals to deliver advice and support to the local community.


The project transformed a conventional teaching space into a purpose-designed legal environment that mirrors contemporary professional practice. Flexible teaching areas, private consultation spaces, collaborative work zones, and acoustically separated meeting pods create a setting that supports client engagement, legal research, teamwork, and skills development.


A key design objective was to balance professionalism with accessibility. Comfortable consultation areas help put clients at ease, while private meeting booths provide secure and confidential spaces for sensitive discussions. Open learning environments support collaborative working and allow students to develop practical legal skills in a real-world setting.

The interior palette combines calming colours, natural materials, and integrated graphics to create an environment that feels welcoming rather than intimidating. Bespoke furniture solutions and adaptable layouts allow the space to support a wide range of activities, including client meetings, workshops, teaching sessions, community engagement events, and legal clinics.


The facility reflects the Law Clinic's wider mission of widening access to justice while providing students with hands-on experience working with real clients and real cases. The clinic delivers support across a range of specialist areas including family law, employment law, immigration and refugee law, welfare law, and environmental law. The service has become an important community resource while enhancing student employability and professional development.
